A Sign Of The (Fast) Times?

Bella Vista's youth meets the past, looks to the future

By Rich Gonzalez

(August 27, 2010) -- Last year, the writing was on the wall. One just needed to know where to look.
While Bella Vista High welcomed in one of the state's best frosh boys cross-country classes in 2009,
it was clear the Broncos would inevitably rise as a power on the Sac-Joaquin Section scene. Months later,
however, it was Del Campo, Jesuit, Rocklin and Fairfield were the Division 2 squads making the most news
come postseason and Bella Vista was nowhere to be found.
But a close check of the Sac-Joaquin's November results revealed that Bella Vista was preparing for
the future. While team frontrunner James Dietler-Bennion finished a modest 41st at the SJS Division 2 Finals
on the varsity level, the group stockpiled the lower levels as the Broncos won the sophomore class team
championship race over Folsom and also downed Jesuit to win the freshman class team battle.
Bella Vista showcased Dietler-Bennion, now a senior, and packaged him with the Brynn Sargent/Tim
O'Shea-led youth movement to steamroll the competition at Friday's Woodland Foundation Cup race at
Woodland High School.
Dietler-Bennion had the day's top time on the two-mile course, winning in 10:16, ten seconds better
than runner-up Jacob Huston of Center. But Sargent and O'Shea sewed up the next two places for the Broncos
in a meet where only each school's top three runners were placed in the elite-level race. In the non-elite race,
Bella Vista was even more prosperous, with Angelo Magliola leading a sweep of the top four places for the
team. All in all, Broncos runners accounted for 7 of the day's 12 fastest boys times.
On the girls side, Bella Vista was equally dominant, claiming 3 of the top 5 places in the elite race
and sweeping the first four spots in the non-elite race!  It should be as no surprise; the Broncos were
runaway winners in the frosh-soph girls division at the SJS sub-sectionals. Sara Lack led Friday's effort for
the Broncos, placing third overall in 12:29. Bear River's Breanne Mitchell was the big winner up front, tearing
out to a 35-second triumph over Woodland's Evie Borchard, 11:54 to 12:29. ....
Although the twilight race was non-scoring affair, it still served as the official season opener for the
2010 California cross-country season. Both the Sac-Joaquin Section and the North Coast Section can start
the season as early as this weekend, while additional CIF sections have the green light next weekend. The
first full slate of statewide action across the ten CIF sections takes place on the weekend of September 11th. ....
When Bella Vista began making noise with its bumper crop youth movement at the start of last school
year, we took notice. But clearly the Broncos are at a new gear right now, with Woodland Foundation Cup race
director Chuck Bruns thinking it's a correlation to former Bella Vista distance great and 1982 California
3200-meter state track champion Harold Kuphaldt.
According to Bruns, Kuphaldt is now on the coaching staff as an assistant and the vibe within the program
is one of excitement and optimism.
"Bella Vista's overall strength impressed many coaches in attendance," Bruns wrote. "Some of the
renewed success must be due to the influence of famed local talent Harold Kuphaldt, who shared an excited
spirit in his new coaching duties as assistant coach on the team."
Kuphaldt's contributions are just the latest layer in a new vibe instilled by coach Brett Sargent, Brynn's
father, as the crew continues to rise. Patience, and careful planning, appears to be paying off....
.... Jerry Jones is the owner of the Dallas Cowboys football team of the NFL and has no known ties to
the Woodland community, but it sure seemed like the master marketer had his fingerprints all over plans for the
inaugural Woodland Foundation Cup. Instead, it was Bruns' own creative business acumen that gets credit for
making the first-year meet a success.
In a move that would have made Jones proud, Bruns opted to turn the meet into a twilight affair in hopes
the novelty starting time would attract more interest. As a "foundation" affair, the event was utilized as a fundraiser
to help cut costs for the coming season.
"We had to charge an attendance fee for fans to help raise some funds," Bruns explained by phone on
Friday. "If we started it toward the evening, we figured the curiosity factor would bring a few more fans out and
make it even more enjoyable for the kids too."
Bruns reported on Saturday that the meet did generate robust receipts for the Woodland Joint Unified
School District and said the meet, which started under 80-degree temperatures and concluded as the mercury
dipped toward the low-70s, will be a fixture for future years. ....
Coach Bruns also reminded that the Yolo County Championships has been canceled for 2010, but
there are plans underway to host the meet again in 2011.
