BEAVERTON, Ore. - 07/10/10 - It was not as easy as last year, but the result was the same for the Vapor Trail 7-on-7 football team in Friday’s Nike 7ON National Championship held in Beaverton, Ore.
Vapor Trail, which is comprised of players from Miami Northwestern (Miami, Fla.), needed two overtimes to scrape past Hyper Fuse of Denton, Texas, 44-42, in the title game.
Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was at the helm for both title games and admitted how different it was this time.
“It was way tougher because a lot of guys are starting for the first time,” said Bridgewater, who has committed to Miami. “This team is young on experience, but we have good players.”
Against Hyper Fuse, which had not lost in its first five games of the event, tight end Dominique Rhymes hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Bridgewater with no time left in regulation to tie the score at 28. But in trying to win the game on a one-point conversion pass it was Hyper Fuse’s Cameron Hunter who came down with the ball in the end zone to force overtime.
Vapor Trail won the game on a touchdown pass from Bridgewater to Elgin Hilliard, which was followed by a game-winning conversion to Jerrill Jenkins in the second overtime.
Bridgewater connected on 32-of-41 passes in the final for 335 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions.
“The final game was crazy with a lot of guys doing different things,” Bridgewater said. “Right now, I feel like Kobe (Bryant) with another MVP award and a championship.”
Not Exactly Déjà-vu
In last year’s final, Vapor Trail rolled past a team from De Soto (De Soto, Texas), 34-23, in the final and went 6-0 over two days.
This year’s team dropped a 29-28 contest to Super Bad (Arlington, Texas) during pool play on Thursday and won in each of its three games on Friday by two points.
